The primary reason to buy the N95 8GB is, arguably, its media playback. Having 8GB of storage equates to nearly 2,000 songs and is a welcome relief compared to many phones, where having any kind of permanent storage is still considered a luxury. For the most part, the N95 lives up to claims made in this area.

cellphone, deconstructed by autos
So the government auction of wireless airwaves began today, and cell phone consumers everywhere are hoping for lowered prices and more competition between companies.

The government has announced some new rules for the auction this time around, the major one being that 40% of the airwaves are going to be for new entrants only. That’s good right? We like new blood! It’ll help in lowering our prices, cuz you know we all pay way to much for our cell phones. So whats the but you ask? Here is it … BUT only companies that are 54% Canadian owned are allowed to enter the auction.

Now I know all you avid NB fans are thinking the same thing as I am. WTF! This means that companies like T-Mobile are cut off from entering Canada, and Bell, Rogers and Telus are still going to dominate the market with huge prices, and we yet again, get screwed. And I agree with you 100%.

Companies expected to enter the market for the available 40% is Manitoba Telecom Services Inc, Shaw Communications Inc, Videotron Ltee and Globalive Communications Corp. I know I am supposed to be a Nerd, but I’ve never heard of these companies … Well except Shaw, but they are a cable company, not a wireless provider!

I honestly think the government messed up with this one. They said last fall that Canada was lagging behind the rest of the industrialized word in adopting mobile communications, and blamed a lack of competition in Canada’s cellphone market. Okay, that’s cool, so then why did they put the restrictions in place? Without them, Canada would have more companies competing for the airwaves and we as consumers would luck out and get better deals.

Anyways enough of my ranting. The auction should last 3 to 5 weeks and results with be announced after each round. Industry Canada also ruled that existing wireless carriers have to rent out space on their towers to new players and sign agreements that allow customers of the new guys to roam on reasonable rates. *Snort* Reasonable rates my ass.
